Fiance's past financial issues affecting my credit and ownership when we get married

by Julie
(Mississippi USA)

I'm about to get married. My fiance has some financial issues that happened before we met. I want to make certain that the things I own and my credit can't be touched when we get married. His name is not on anything and won't be after the marriage.

Answer:

Hello Julie,

If your credit is good and your fiance is still working on repairing his then you need to keep everything separate.

All of your utility bills and the rest of your shared expenses should be in your name and your name only.

If you apply for any new accounts or credit cards then do not sign up for joint accounts. This may or may not be a touchy issue for you and your significant other but it is the best realistic approach.

Having financial problems and credit problems can come from a variety of reasons which can sometimes be complicated.

If your fiance is sincere and serious about fixing his credit and financial problems then you can keep your accounts separate from each other until then.
