Severe Burn Injury - My child suffered burns at a cafe

Hi, was wondering what more can be done about a personal injury involving burns to a child's hands.

I took my kids to a cafe for a quick bite to eat while we were shopping. One of my kids is just three years old. Right after ordering them drinks and myself a coffee, the waitress came over with an entire pot of coffee. Before I even realized it, she put it on the table directly in front of my three year old.

Of course, my child who is too young to know any better reached out with both hands and grabbed the hot coffee pot. He now has serious burns to both hands that required a trip to the emergency room. We have to go back for check ups as well. I was furious with the cafe owner and his waitress but I do understand that this was an unfortunate accident.

I know the cafe owner for some time and know that he can't afford to compensate us properly. I don't want to put him out of business because of this but my insurance doesn't cover everything. This has already been costly for me and it's only going to get worse. How do I settle this situation with the cafe owner so neither one of us lose our shirts? I'm hesitant to take the advice of my insurance agent or his without a second opinion. Thank you
