Tenant / Landlord Questions
URGENT! I got a letter from my landlord stating that my lease will not be renewed. I'm an excellent tenant and pay on time. After investigating, it's because another tenant complained of noise. The noise complaint is false.
There was no warning, there was no investigation to get to the bottom of this complaint. Can the landlord deny me a lease on unfounded accusations? What can I do?

Hello,
First of all, you need to contact your landlord and calmly explain that there was never any warning given to you. In that case, you could state that there was no way of knowing that another tenant had a problem with you and your household.
If there is a noise complaint, you should be given a chance to defend yourself. As you say, the complaint in your view is false. Regardless, your landlord should not just blindly believe the complaint without giving you a chance to defend yourself.
Furthermore, it is definitely an overreaction to try and kick you out without first giving you a warning or notification that there was a complaint.
Try and resolve the situation with your landlord first before getting the law involved. If you are unable to make any progress there, then unfortunately you may have to consult with a lawyer to weigh your options.
Can you let me know which state you live in. As I'm sure you know, states laws vary from one state to another. But if you live in a state that has tough laws on the books, you may be protected from this type of situation. Possibly to the point that you would not even have to hire an attorney.
